Facial fillers are injectable products that can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, raise scar depressions, enhance lips or replace volume loss. Exposure to sun, loss of hormonal balance, and years of muscle movement contribute to breakdown of the skins collagen and elastin. In addition, after the age of 30, our face starts to lose fat and bone that normally holds the skin up and in its place. Eventually, gravity takes over, and the skin starts to sag down into the lower parts of the face, creating nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and jowls.
Various types of facial fillers are available and each is designed with one or several purposes. Some examples of products used by our providers are listed below, but each patient is unique and consultation is always best to determine which product(s) will provide you with the best results.
Juvederm Ultra Plus: Made of a hyaluronic acid gel, a naturally-occurring substance in the skin that contributes to volume and hydration. Juvederm is designed to temporarily correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds and can also be used to provide significant volume to the lips. The product typically lasts 12 months.
Voluma: The newest product in the Juvederm family. Voluma is a firm hyaluronic acid gel that is FDA approved to augment cheek structure and replace lost volume to the mid-face. It acts as a lifting agent and can lift the cheeks back up, thereby pulling up the nasolabial folds, lessening the tired appearance that comes with age, and even improving the jowl area. This product typically lasts 24 months.
Restylane and Restylane Lyft: Non-animal, biodegradable gel composed of hyaluronic acid. Restylane was actually the first hyaluronic acid filler to be approved for facial injection in the U.S. Restylane and Restylane Lyft are soft tissue dermal fillers that add volume to the skin smoothing facial folds and wrinkles in areas around the mouth and eyes. Restylane Lyft typically lasts 18 months and Restylane typically lasts 9-12 months.
Belotero Balance: A hyaluronic acid injectable filler designed to integrate into facial skin tissue. It is unique in that it is the only filler that can be injected into very fine lines just underneath the surface of the skin, without creating a shiny blue-like appearance, called the Tyndall effect. It is an ideal option for treating delicate areas such as etched-in smile lines, vertical lip lines, and tear troughs (the dark circles under your eyes).
Sculptra: Uniquely crafted with bio compatible poly-L-lactic acid, this advanced FDA approved formula works to replenish collagen levels and revitalize the skin on a cellular basis. Unlike botulinum toxin injectables, Sculptra can soften facial wrinkles and fine lines without minimizing muscle activity, leaving you in control of your appearance instead of the other way around.
The average length of filler injections is 30 to 60 minutes per session, depending on the individual and the number of areas being treated. Some of the most common side effects include: bruising at injection site, numbness, and temporary redness, swelling, pain/tenderness, or discoloration. Although there is often no downtime needed, you will be advised not to plan on going to any major social events within a day or two after your injection, just in case you do develop some significant swelling or bruising.
